When shopping can get personal

I can't believe that we are over a third of the way through 2010! I've been married for over a year now and I've been reminiscing about that time recently.

I didn't go down the traditional white wedding dress route - ever since I was a young girl, I'd never had that dream that I'd walk down the aisle in beautiful gown (this doesn't mean I'm anti-wedding gown, it just isn't me). The thing is, less than six months before our trip to Vegas, I really had no idea what I was going to wear.

Blackpool has an ongoing regeneration project and a key part of this was a brand new shopping centre* with Debenhams the centrepiece. I decided to take advantage of their free personal shopper service and with my limited budget thought there was a slight chance of finding something suitable. I took my Marc Jacob shoes along to the appointment to see if I could find a dress to match my favourite shoes.

I'd never done this before so didn't know what to expect, but my expectations were surpassed. Helen, the personal shopper, had previously discussed what I wanted. Initially, I specified pale gold dresses to try on, despite the fact that this colour totally washed me out. Helen truly knew her business, meeting my request as a customer despite the fact that gold does nothing for me! While subtly telling me that the colour wasn't ideal, she was great at getting me to try on dresses that I wouldn't consider normally. She also had a good eye for choosing colours that really complemented me. Best of all, she actually got me into dresses that were a size smaller than i thought I could fit in!
I spent two hours trying on long gowns, assorted prom dresses, tiaras and fascinators before finally agreeing on the first dress she recommended (pictured is me in the final choice on the monorail in Vegas just after I got married).
I'd love to undertake a personal shopping session again and definitely would recommend it to anyone who's struggling to buy a special outfit or just needs advice on a capsule wardrobe. Sometimes you just need a little help. I just have to start saving and plan my next session!

*Don't get me wrong, Blackpool is a long, long way from competing with city shopping centres such as the Trafford Centre, Oxford Street or Westfield - if you do live near these, then you are extremely lucky and I am extremely jealous!

Thank you Queen Penelope, I took some Benefit make-up lessons to make sure I achieved the look I wanted to go with the dress. xx
